Board Member LAMAH - Chair of Mentoring Program
As a Board Member and Past President of the Latino Medical Association of Houston (LAMAH) for 2023–2024, I have witnessed firsthand the extraordinary power of mentorship to transform lives, careers, and communities. Our Mentorship Program is not simply an educational initiative—it is a bridge between generations of Latino physicians, students, and aspiring health professionals who share a common purpose: to serve, to lead, and to give back.
Throughout my presidency, one of our highest priorities was strengthening pathways for Latino students who often face systemic barriers to complete a career in medicine. Through intentional mentor–mentee relationships, we provide guidance, advocacy, and inspiration. Our mentors offer more than advice; they share lived experiences, resilience, and the wisdom that comes from navigating a complex healthcare system while honoring one’s cultural identity.
The impact of this program extends far beyond academic success. We are cultivating confident, compassionate leaders who will one day serve communities that desperately need culturally responsive care. When our mentees succeed, our communities become healthier, stronger, and more equitable.
Serving as Past President has reaffirmed my belief that mentorship is one of the most powerful tools we have to close opportunity gaps in medicine. LAMAH’s commitment to lifting others as we rise is what makes this organization exceptional. The future of Latino healthcare leadership is bright—and it is being shaped today through mentorship.
