Speaking with Diego López Maradona inevitably means connecting with the legacy of Diego Armando Maradona—his uncle and one of the most influential figures in the history of world soccer. Yet far from living in anyone’s shadow, Diego has turned that connection into a platform for impact, building his own path through discipline, resilience, and purpose-driven leadership.
The son of Ana Maradona and former professional player Daniel López, his story is part of a family DNA that breathes soccer. Now based in The Woodlands after more than 15 years in the United States, Diego shares his story with us—unfiltered—about what it meant to grow up alongside his uncle… and what, according to him, really happened in his final years.
This is a story of family, learning—and pain.
“He was like my older brother… he taught me everything in life.”
From a very young age, Diego lived close to him in a humble, tight-knit family where talent had not yet changed their destiny. That bond shaped him forever:
“It was the first time anyone called him ‘uncle’… and it made him happy.”
“Maradona was surrounded by people who hurt him”
The conversation shifts—deeper, raw, and uncomfortable. But necessary.
“He fell in with the wrong people… and as a family, we didn’t do enough.”
Diego doesn’t avoid the subject. He speaks about decisions, mistakes, and an environment that—according to him—ended up isolating one of the greatest figures in sports history:
“They kept changing his phone numbers… we couldn’t reach him.”“They manipulated information… they turned him against his own family.”
In an era where information is power, his words echo far beyond soccer.
“They basically had him held captive”
One of the strongest statements in the interview.
“They blocked his channels, altered the news… he was controlled.”
He describes scenes that sound almost scripted—but insists they were real:
“They gave him alcohol all day… and while he talked, they had him signing documents.”
“He died too young… they led him to that”
When asked about his uncle’s final months, his answer is direct:
“They didn’t give him the medication he needed… they treated other things instead.”“There were financial interests… absolutely.”
And he closes with a statement that inevitably sparks conversation:
“They led him to end that way.”
Maradona, Messi, and the power of family
Diego also draws a comparison that doesn’t go unnoticed:
“Messi’s family learned from what wasn’t done with Maradona.”
He points to Lionel Messi as an example of a strong structure that protects the athlete:
“No one gets close to Messi… only his inner circle.”
From legacy to purpose: community, soccer, and impact
Far from the media spotlight, Diego is building his own legacy in Texas:
Training young soccer players
Working with children with autism and Down syndrome
Advocating sports as a tool for social impact
His story doesn’t stay in the past. It becomes action, local impact, and purpose-driven leadership.
What’s next: World Cup 2026, analysis & live conversation
This coming Saturday, June 6, Diego López Maradona will be part of a unique experience:

A story that doesn’t need filters
In an age of AI, metrics, and virality, one thing remains irreplaceable: truth told from within.
And as Diego said:
“When he loved someone… he gave his life for them.”
Maybe that’s the key.Not the myth.
But the human story behind it.
