Dr. Juan Carlos Rozo: The Heart of a Physician Who Beats for His People

By Patricia Contreras

Dr. Juan Carlos Rozo: A Heart That Beats to the Rhythm of Service and Family

In a world where medicine sometimes seems to have forgotten its essence, Dr. Juan Carlos Rozo reminds us that being a physician is an act of love, compassion, and social responsibility.

A renowned cardiologist born in Bogotá, Colombia, Dr. Rozo is currently the Medical Director of Cardiology at Houston Methodist Creekside Comprehensive Care Center in The Woodlands, Texas—an innovative space that combines cutting-edge technology with a warm, compassionate, and human-centered approach, thoughtfully designed to serve the Hispanic community.

From an early age, Juan Carlos knew his life would be tied to science and service. He did not come from a family of physicians, but from one where helping others was a non-negotiable principle. His mother, a woman from the Santander region with a strong character and an immense heart, taught him that there was always room at home for anyone in need.

“She always made time to help others. She taught us that love is shown through actions,” he shares.

“I Brought a Heart to My Classroom”

It was during elementary school, thanks to his biology teacher, Miss Blanca, that he discovered his passion for understanding the human body.

“She taught me that if you do things well, you can change someone’s world,” he recalls with gratitude.

His curiosity led him to ask his mother for a microscope, and from a young age he began conducting dissections and experiments. At one point, he even brought a preserved heart to class to explain how it worked—causing tears among his classmates, but also making it clear that his destiny was in medicine.

Medicine Cannot Be Just a Business

After completing his medical training at the Colombian School of Medicine and fulfilling his social service with Colombia’s national oil company, Dr. Rozo decided to continue his specialization in the United States. He arrived in Texas in 1995, where he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. His passion for the heart later led him to the prestigious Texas Heart Institute, where he specialized in Interventional Cardiology.

Despite his professional achievements, Dr. Rozo has never lost sight of his commitment to patients as human beings.

“Medicine cannot be just a business. Medicine is a calling. It’s about doing good without asking who,” he affirms.

Houston Methodist Creekside

Today, in The Woodlands, Dr. Rozo leads a healthcare center that is setting a new standard: the Houston Methodist Creekside Comprehensive Care Center—a place where technology and humanity meet. This pilot center, developed in collaboration with the Department of Innovation and Technology, uses artificial intelligence to enhance physician-patient interaction, enabling care to be delivered in Spanish with warmth and personal attention.

“Language is key. Allowing our patients to express themselves in their own language, without fear and with confidence, is essential. There is nothing more human than being heard and understood,” says Dr. Rozo.

In addition to cardiology, the center offers neurology, endocrinology, orthopedics, and primary care—all under one roof. The space is designed so Hispanic patients feel at home, confident they are receiving high-quality care in their language and from a team that understands their values and culture.

Moved to Tears

Behind the white coat, however, is the human being—the husband and the father. When speaking about his family, Dr. Rozo becomes visibly emotional:

“Behind every great man is a great woman. My wife is my pillar, my strength. Thanks to her, I can dedicate myself to caring for others. Her support is unconditional.”

Family is the engine that drives his daily life. His son Sebastián has chosen to follow in his footsteps and is currently studying pre-med. His other son, based in Colombia, works on sustainable agriculture projects that support vulnerable communities.

“For me, seeing my children committed to service is my greatest pride. It means the legacy continues,” he says with emotion.

It is the small moments that keep that family bond alive: having breakfast together, sharing a few minutes of conversation before heading to work, and finding at home the embrace that comforts after a long day of consultations.

“The work of a physician demands a lot from you, but family is where you recover your heart,” he says, his eyes shining.

Innovation Must Not Distance Us from People

In Dr. Rozo’s vision, the medicine of the future must strike a balance between technology and humanity.

“Innovation should bring us closer to people, not farther away. Patients must feel they are part of a team, where together we decide the best path forward.”

His message to the Hispanic community is clear:

“Do not lose your culture. Hold on to your values. Work with passion and integrity. In this country, opportunities exist—but it’s up to us to do things right, with excellence and with humanity.”

Dr. Juan Carlos Rozo not only cares for hearts through medicine—he inspires hearts to beat stronger from the soul. He is living proof that true medicine is practiced with science, yes, but above all, with heart.
