Alan San Miguel: Responsible Business Prosperity in Times of Uncertainty

Updated: 1 day ago

By WoodlandStories Magazine

The year 2026 begins with renewed leadership at the Mexican Entrepreneurs Association (EMA), The Woodlands–Houston chapter. As of January 1, attorney Alan San Miguel assumed the presidency of an organization that now transcends borders, nationalities, and stereotypes, positioning itself as a hub for Latino and multicultural entrepreneurs seeking to grow, invest, and prosper responsibly in the United States.

While the association’s name reflects its Mexican roots, its vision is intentionally inclusive. “To be Mexican, you don’t necessarily have to be born in Mexico,” says San Miguel, who was born in the United States but raised in Monterrey. “Identity is also shaped by culture, values, and the way we do business.”

An Association That Guides, Connects, and Supports

At the core of San Miguel’s leadership is the concept of “responsible prosperity”—a vision that recognizes business growth cannot be separated from its human, social, and ethical impact.

“Entrepreneurs often don’t know where to turn, who to talk to, or how to make decisions during complex times. The association must become that point of connection, mentorship, and guidance,” explains the new president.

San Miguel emphasizes that every business has at least seven critical areas—leadership, marketing and sales, operations, finance, metrics, human talent, and culture—and that each must be managed responsibly, especially in today’s challenging economic and social climate.

The Current Landscape: Real Challenges for Small and Mid-Sized Businesses

One of EMA’s greatest concerns is the impact the current migration environment has had on key sectors, particularly restaurants and small Hispanic-owned businesses.

“Many business owners have seen a decline in sales because people are afraid to go out, spend money, or even go to work. This doesn’t just affect businesses—it affects entire families and the local economy,” he notes.

From his perspective, the association must serve as a space where real experiences, practical solutions, and actionable strategies are shared to help sustain and strengthen businesses—without losing sight of the dignity and stability of the people behind them.

Mentorship, Education, and Legal Guidance at No Cost

Among the benefits to be officially announced toward the end of January is a series of exclusive monthly legal talks for members, addressing key topics such as:

  • How to properly choose a business partner

  • How to vet and investigate vendors

  • Best business practices

  • Prevention of legal and financial risks

All of this will be offered at no additional cost to members, as a way to democratize access to reliable, professional information.

Opportunities Amid Uncertainty

Regarding the business outlook for 2026, San Miguel acknowledges two prevailing perspectives: those who see a slow and risky year ahead, and those who recognize strategic opportunities.

“There will be businesses for sale because their owners decide to return to their home countries. Responsible prosperity means not taking advantage of others, but rather creating arrangements where both parties benefit,” he explains.

The key, he says, lies in maintaining an open mindset supported by professional guidance—allowing entrepreneurs to invest and grow without falling into impulsive or destructive decisions.
